Question 1:
Describe the journey of food through the human digestive system.
Answer
The journey of food begins in the mouth, where the teeth chew the food and saliva starts digesting starch. The food then passes through the oesophagus into the stomach, where it is mixed with digestive juices and partially digested. Next, it enters the small intestine, where digestive juices from the liver and pancreas complete digestion. Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestine. The undigested food moves into the large intestine, where water is absorbed. Finally, the waste is stored in the rectum and removed from the body through the anus.
