वेद शब्द संस्कृत के विद् से आया है जिसका अर्थ है-ज्ञान (उदाहरण के लिए विद्या) । मुख्य रूप से चार वेद हैं- ऋग्वेद, सामवेद, यजुर्वेद और अथर्ववेद । वेद भारत के सबसे पुराने पवित्र ग्रंथों में से एक हैं, जो प्राचीन संस्कृत में लिखे गए हैं।
